Former Indian Premier League commissioner Lalit Modi on Monday shared a video from businessman Vijay Mallya’s birthday celebration, which quickly drew sharp reactions online. In the clip, Modi is heard making a remark that many users described as provocative.
“We are the two fugitives, the biggest fugitives of India,” Lalit Modi is heard saying in the video.
The post was uploaded on Modi’s Instagram account along with a caption that read, “Let me do something to break the internet down again. Something for you folks. Wat your heart out with envy (sic).”

Strong Reactions On Social Media
The video triggered criticism from several users, who accused the two men of mocking Indian authorities. One user commented, “What a mockery they have made of Indian government.”

Another wrote, “You ain't breaking no internet son sit down.”
Some users also questioned law enforcement agencies. “Indian law shame that they dare to make such a video (sic),” one comment read, while another said, “They are laughing at Indian CBI/ED.”
Vijay Mallya’s Legal Status
Vijay Mallya was declared a Fugitive Economic Offender in January 2019 by a special court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). He is accused of defaulting on multiple bank loans and facing money laundering charges. Mallya left India in March 2016 and has since been fighting extradition proceedings in the United Kingdom.
Lalit Modi nd IPL Allegations
Lalit Modi, who played a key role in setting up the Indian Premier League, left India in 2010 amid allegations of financial irregularities. The Enforcement Directorate has accused him of tax evasion, money laundering and manipulating the 2009 IPL broadcast rights deal.
According to the agency, Modi allegedly influenced the broadcast rights process in return for kickbacks amounting to more than Rs 125 crore.
The video has once again brought attention to both men’s long-running legal cases. While no official response has been issued by Indian authorities so far, the clip continues to circulate widely on social media.
