What started as a formal eviction order has now turned into a full-blown political dispute in Bihar. Rashtriya Janata Dal leaders on Tuesday issued an ultimatum to the BJP government over former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi's right to occupy the bungalow.

The leaders argued that if Devi is forced to leave the house, all RJD MLAs and MLCs will collectively vacate their government residences as well. The opposition party members labelled the eviction notice a "political vendetta". The members claimed that as the leader of the opposition and former CM of Bihar, Devi remains fully eligible for the residence.

RJD Issues Ultimatum

Issuing a hard-hitting statement, RJD party chief spokesperson, Shakti Singh Yadav, said that opposition mirrors the government and is an integral part of it. Political decorum must be observed.

He further said that Rabri Devi's term lasts until 2030. The day her term ends, she will leave the residence wearing slippers. "We have no attachment to the government residence, nor is it anyone's property." The bungalow arrangements reserved for the Assembly Speaker, Deputy Chief Minister, and others have been changed, and the government is now making this argument.

'Petty politics'

RJD MLC Sunil Kumar Singh criticised the saffron party over the bungalow controversy. He said the bungalow eviction action was part of petty politics. Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary was pursuing vendetta politics and diverting public attention from real issues like rape, corruption, inflation, and unemployment.

The ruling NDA, however, has denied the RJD's arguments, clarifying that the 10 Circular Road bungalow has been officially reallocated to state minister Nand Kishor Ram, and there is no scope for reconsidering the eviction directive.

The family had been allotted the 10 Circular Road bungalow from Raj Bhavan and the chief minister's residence by the previous Nitish Kumar government.

The bungalow, besides housing the RJD's proverbial first family, has for years served as the opposition party.
