Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on September 30 inaugurated India’s longest and Chennai’s first steel flyover in the Thiyagaraya Nagar area. The 2-km-long steel flyover is officially named J. Anbazhagan Flyover in honour of the late MLA J. Anbazhagan.

The steel flyover will connect South Usman Road to CIT Nagar Main Road in Thiyagaraya Nagar, aiming to ease traffic congestion in one of Chennai’s busiest zones.

Key Highlights Of Chennai’s First Steel Bridge

- Constructed at a cost of Rs 164.92 crore, the steel flyover has been built using 3,800 tonnes of steel and is supported by 53 steel pillars.

- The flyover is designed to significantly reduce congestion in Thiyagaraya Nagar and reduce travel time for commuters from key areas such as Guindy, Saidapet, and Nungambakkam.

- Traffic flow will improve at several critical junctions, such as South Usman Road-Burkit Road-Madley Road; South Usman Road-South West Boag Road-New Boag Road; and South Usman Road-CIT Nagar North Road.

- The J. Anbazhagan Flyover, or steel flyover, will support two-way traffic and feature two additional ramps, including a 120-metre entry ramp from the T. Nagar bus terminus and a 100-metre exit ramp leading into the T. Nagar commercial zone.

- Additionally, a six-metre-wide service road with pedestrian footpaths will be constructed on both sides of the flyover to benefit local residents.

The flyover is expected to benefit over 40,000 vehicles and two lakh residents daily.

The flyover was inaugurated on Wednesday, October 1, in the presence of several dignitaries, including Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru, Health Minister M. Subramanian, Chennai Mayor R. Priya, and senior civic officials, Times Now reported. According to the officials, the steel flyover will stand as a symbol of Chennai’s infrastructure ambitions, reflecting the city’s move towards modern and sustainable mobility solutions.
