Chennai News: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) will open a new flyover linking South Usman Road with CIT Nagar First Main Road on September 28. The 1.2-km elevated stretch, constructed at a cost of Rs 164.92 crore, is expected to ease traffic congestion in the busy T Nagar locality.
Work on the project began in June 2023. However, its inauguration was delayed by nearly six months due to pending police clearance for demolition and reconnection work between Burkit Road and the old flyover.
According to GCC chief engineer (bridges) B Shankaravelu, the new corridor will significantly reduce travel time for vehicles coming from areas such as Saidapet, Guindy, Adyar, Kodambakkam, Anna Nagar, and Nungambakkam. The newly built 1.2-km bridge connects with the existing 0.8-km stretch, allowing commuters to cover a 2-km route in just a few minutes.
The structure combines steel and concrete, with around 4,000 metric tonnes of steel used in its construction. Importantly, the project required no land acquisition. IIT Madras tested and certified the bridge before its opening. Officials confirmed that the project was funded under the Infrastructure and Amenities Fund.
This marks the first steel flyover built by the Tamil Nadu government in Chennai. The state already has one more steel bridge, constructed earlier by the National Highways Authority of India.
Residents have welcomed the project, expecting smoother traffic movement in the area. “Usually, we used to get stuck for hours in traffic here, but with the new flyover, the commute will be a relief in the locality. Also, with the newly laid road and encroachments removed, vehicle movement will improve further,” said Sooriya Basheer of the T Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association.
