Chennai News: A local court in Chennai has sentenced a 30-year-old man to death for the murder of a 20-year-old college student, whom he pushed in front of a moving train. The incident occurred at St Thomas Railway Station in 2022 and the case has drawn significant public attention.

The man, identified as Sathish, was convicted after evidence revealed that he had been stalking the victim, Sathya. On the day of the incident, he shoved her towards a suburban train as it approached the station, resulting in her immediate death when the train ran over her.

The initial investigation was conducted by local police, but the case was later handed over to the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) for further inquiry. Following a thorough investigation, the CB-CID presented the evidence in court.

On Monday, the Mahila Court delivered its verdict, declaring Sathish guilty of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. The judge stated, "The accused is sentenced to death and that he be hanged by the neck until he is dead." In addition to the death penalty, the court imposed a fine of Rs 35,000 on Sathish and ordered him to pay Rs 10 lakh in compensation to Sathya's family.

In separate news, a two-member fact-finding committee from the National Commission for Women (NCW) arrived in Chennai on Monday to investigate the sexual assault of a 19-year-old engineering student on the Anna University campus. The team, consisting of NCW member Mamta Kumari and former Maharashtra DGP Praveen Dixit, will meet with the survivor, her family, university authorities and others.

The incident occurred on December 23,and the accused, Gnanasekaran, was arrested on December 25. The Madras High Court also directed the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for further investigation. The NCW has accused Tamil Nadu police of negligence and ordered action against officials responsible for leaking the FIR.
