Chennai Flower Show: Chennai is buzzing with excitement as preparations continue for the city’s second flower show at Semmozhi Poonga. Colourful flowering plants are being carefully arranged in a variety of pots, creating a vibrant atmosphere in the park located on Cathedral Road. The event is set to open to the public on January 2, 2025, with Chief Minister M. K. Stalin expected to inaugurate the festivities.
According to The Hindu report, visitors can look forward to stunning displays featuring carpets of pink and red petunias, bright yellow marigolds and elegant delphiniums in shades of purple, white and cream. The show will run daily from 10 AM to 7 PM until January 18. Approximately 3 million potted flowers are being sourced from the Department of Agriculture’s horticulture gardens in Udhagamandalam and Kodaikanal, along with roses from Krishnagiri and Hosur.

The plants are being artistically arranged along pathways, inside imaginative structures like a clock, train and heritage car, as well as a butterfly shape and the steps leading to an open auditorium. Roses in various colours, including red, pink, and white, will be in full bloom just in time for the event.
The Hindu report quoted an official explaining that, unlike the Ooty flower show, which features cut flowers arranged in elaborate designs, this event will showcase live plants nurtured for months at local nurseries. The plants have been grown from seeds sown at the right time to ensure they bloom during the show. Organic manure and neem-based pesticides have been used to promote healthy growth.

Careful attention has been given to the transportation of these delicate plants. They have been well-watered during transit and upon arrival, they are watered again and placed in shaded areas. Additional soil and manure have also been brought in for those plants that require it.
While the final touches are being made, Semmozhi Poonga will remain closed to the public in the coming days. More than 50 varieties of flowers from the botanical gardens of Ooty and Kodaikanal will be on display, with entry tickets available both at the venue and online.
