Chennai Rain Update: Chennai was hit by heavy rainfall on Wednesday night, leading to significant waterlogging in various parts of the city. The Regional Meteorological Centre issued a yellow alert and forecasted a warning for continued heavy rain in Chennai on Thursday. The downpour began around 6 PM and lasted into the night, resulting in power outages and severe traffic congestion.

The meteorological centre has forecast light to moderate rains in northern Tamil Nadu until the weekend. Additionally, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rainfall across several districts in Telangana today.

Chennai Flight Cancellation

The intense rain caused disruptions for air travel, impacting at least 35 flight services at Chennai Airport. The heavy showers escalated around 9 PM, bringing thunder and lightning, which severely affected flight operations and left many passengers stranded.

An Indigo Airlines flight from Tiruchirappalli, carrying 68 passengers, was forced to return to Bengaluru after it was unable to land in Chennai due to the adverse weather conditions. Multiple flights from cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar were left circling the airport, unable to safely land during the storm.

In total, 20 flights scheduled to depart for various destinations, like Kochi, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Indore, Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Kuala Lumpur—experienced delays of up to two hours. Furthermore, two Sri Lankan Airlines flights that had arrived in Chennai and were supposed to return to Sri Lanka were cancelled due to the inclement weather.

After a brief respite in the rain, some aircraft were able to land. However, an Indigo flight arriving from Tiruchirappalli at 10:05 PM had to be diverted to Bengaluru due to low fuel after circling for too long.

Overall, Wednesday's weather led to the delay of three incoming flights and 20 outgoing flights, along with the cancellation of two flights, affecting a total of 35 flight services.

Chennai Rain

Official reports indicate that from 8:30 AM on Wednesday to 5:30 AM on Thursday, Nungambakkam recorded 7.42 cm of rainfall, while Menambakkam saw 7.12 cm. The rainfall also impacted nearby districts, including Tiruvallur, Vellore and Cuddalore, as well as the union territory of Puducherry. Weather stations in Coimbatore, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Vellore and Puducherry reported rainfall amounts ranging from 0.2 mm to 8.0 mm.
