Chennai Weather: Chennai on Thursday experienced its hottest day of the year so far with Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recording 36.4 degrees Celsius and 37.7 degrees Celsius, around 3.6 degrees Celsius and 4.3 degrees Celsius above normal. An unusual heat wave like condition is prevailing in Chennai currently. Day temperatures crossed 37 degrees Celsius in 11 weather stations in the city with Erode recording the highest of 39.2 degrees Celsius, around 3 degrees Celsius above normal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast maximum temperature to be 2-3 degrees Celsius above normal at isolated pockets of Tamil Nadu till March 10. Dry weather may prevail over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal till March 9, as per a TOI report.

Weather blogger K Srikanth said it is also the highest temperature recorded as of March 6 since the year 2000. Also, it is the 3rd earliest instance of Meenambakkam touching 37 degrees Celsius in a calendar year since 1985. 2009 saw 37 degrees Celsius by March 1 and 1985 saw by March 3.

What IMD Says

IMD has declared this year's February as the hottest in India in the last 125 years. The IMD report also forecast that during March to May season 2025, above-normal number of heatwave days are likely over most parts of the country.

“Above-normal heatwave days are expected over most parts of the country, including Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu during March 2025,” reads the report.

Not just in Tamil Nadu, most cities across the southern peninsula are grappling with intense heat. Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and northern Karnataka are all witnessing temperatures above normal levels.

Chennai Weather Forecast

March 8: A partly cloudy sky is expected throughout the day. The temperature will range from 24 degrees Celsius in the morning to a high of 36 degrees Celsius.

March 9: The city will see a partly cloudy sky with no major weather changes. Daytime temperatures may reach 35 degrees Celsius, while the minimum will be around 24 degrees Celsius.

March 10: A partly cloudy sky will be accompanied by a possibility of moderate rain or thunderstorms. Temperatures will vary between 25 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius.

March 11: Rain is expected to bring some relief from the heat. The temperature will range from 26 degrees Celsius to 34 degrees Celsius.

March 12: Showers will continue, keeping the weather cool and damp. The temperature will hover between 26 degrees Celsius and 34 degrees Celsius.
