Chennai Weather Update: Chennai is set to experience light to moderate rainfall today, with cloudy skies prevailing throughout the day. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts across Tamil Nadu due to the expected rainfall.
Residents can expect temperatures to range between 29 degrees C and 35 degrees C, with steady southwest winds blowing at around 19 km/h. The weather conditions are influenced by a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, prompting authorities to advise caution, especially in coastal areas.

Rainfall Forecast Across Tamil Nadu
Following the refreshing showers on Monday that eased the heatwave, the Regional Meteorological Department anticipates light to moderate rains in several districts including Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Villupuram, Kallakurichy, Cuddalore, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Puducherry, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Karaikal. Due to this, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for these regions.
Rainfall is also expected in Chennai and neighbouring districts such as Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Vellore, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode, Kanchipuram, Tanjavur, Karur, Namakkal, and Ranipettai. Temperatures in these areas are likely to drop by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius, offering some relief from the current warmth. This weather activity is attributed to a cyclonic circulation forming over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjacent South Andaman Sea.
The IMD has highlighted that Chennai’s rainfall is directly influenced by this cyclonic system in the Bay of Bengal. Furthermore, squally winds with speeds reaching up to 55 km/h are expected along the southern Tamil Nadu coast, including the Gulf of Mannar and nearby Comorin regions.
The southwest monsoon is gradually progressing, now covering parts of the south Arabian Sea, Maldives, Comorin region, and central to southern Bay of Bengal. The IMD forecasts an early onset of the monsoon over Kerala, which will bring increased rainfall to Tamil Nadu in the coming days, promising a much-needed respite from the heat.
