Cough Syrup Death: Weeks after multiple children were killed after consuming contaminated cough syrup in Madhya Pradesh's Chhidwara, the case has once again come to the surface, as a five-month-old baby girl died within hours of being given an ayurvedic cough syrup.
In an immediate action against the shop that sold the medicine, the authorities have sealed the shop and initiated a detailed investigation into the matter.
The child was suffering from a cold and a cough. She died on Thursday morning as her health deteriorated after she was administered the cough syrup her family bought from a local shop on October 27. She was declared dead after being rushed to Bichua Community Health Centre.

Stock Seized, Shop Sealed After Death
In a punitive action against the shop, the authorities have sealed the shop and seized the remaining stock. As the Chhindwara administration ordered the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) to conduct a detailed inquiry, the product has been sent for laboratory analysis.
According to a report by The Indian Express, the CMHO stated that the investigation into the case will be conducted under the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, adding that the infant ayurvedic formulation was sold in excess of the regulatory standards.
“We are awaiting the post-mortem report to confirm the cause of death,” CMHO Dr Naresh Gonne added.
Infant Was Administered Doctor Recommended Medicine
The infant's father accused the local health centre and chemist of negligence. “We only gave her what the store recommended. Within hours, she stopped breathing,” he said.
