Cough Syrup Row: Amid a massive row over the deaths of 14 children in Madhya Pradesh allegedly due to cough syrup intake, the police have arrested the doctor who prescribed the syrup. The officials stated that most of the patients were admitted at the clinic of pediatrician Praveen Soni in Chhindwara. Apart from this, the state government also filed a case against Srisan Pharmaceuticals for manufacturing the syrup that deteriorated the health of the children. Earlier on Saturday, the state government banned the syrup after receiving a detailed report from Tamil Nadu (where the syrup is manufactured).

The officials stated that samples of the drug contained nearly 50 per cent diethylene glycol, a highly toxic substance, leading to the ban. The Tamil Nadu Directorate of Drug Control had declared that the syrup was "Not of Standard Quality" after the test at the Drug Testing Laboratory in Chennai. The parents claimed that the children showed symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and sudden stoppage of urination, signs of Diethylene Glycol (DEG) poisoning.

Earlier on Saturday, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced a ban on the syrup with immediate effect. The chief minister also assured strong action against the people involved in the wrongdoings after receiving a detailed report from the production unit in Tamil Nadu. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the chief minister stated that the ban has also been imposed on other products of the manufacturer of the syrup.

"The sale of this syrup has been banned across Madhya Pradesh. A ban is also being imposed on other products of the company that manufactures the syrup," CM Yadav posted on X. Kerala has also suspended the sale and distribution of cough syrup Coldrif, after the medicine was linked to the deaths of at least 11 children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan over the past month.
