Cuttack Violence Update: The Director-General of Police (DGP) of Odisha, Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, has warned against anti-social elements after violence broke out during Durga Idol immersion in Cuttack over loud music.

Parts of Cuttak have been placed under curfew for 36 hours at 10 pm on Sunday, the internet was suspended for 24 hours, and six people were arrested to prevent further escalation of unrest.

The fresh violence late on Sunday followed a clash early morning on Saturday during an idol immersion procession in the Dargha Bazaar area.

Prohibitory orders were imposed in 13 police station areas, and the internet has been suspended from 7 pm on Sunday to 7 pm on Monday.

The prohibitory orders will be imposed in the police station areas of Dargah Bazaar, Mangalabag, Cantonment, Purighat, Lalbag, Bidanasi, Markat Nagar, CDA Phase-2, Malgodam, Badambadi, Jagatpur, Bayalis Mouza, and Sadar, the police commissioner S Dev Dutta Singh said.

Cuttack Violence Began Over Loud Music

Police said the confrontation began after a few residents objected to loud music being played during the immersion. What started as a verbal exchange soon turned violent, with stones and glass bottles allegedly thrown from nearby rooftops at the devotees. Several people were injured, including Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo.

Six Injured After Alleged Stone Pelting On Crowd

At least half a dozen, including Cuttack Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo, sustained injuries after violence broke out between two groups. Besides, several shops and roadside stalls were also damaged in the ensuing chaos.

Police immediately intervened and lathi-charged to disperse the crowd; meanwhile, the immersion process was halted for nearly three hours before being resumed under tight security.

Police Commissioner S Dev Datt Singh said, "Those arrested were involved in stone pelting and were identified through CCTV footage. More arrests will follow."

Cuttack Violence: Fresh Clash After VHP Rally

Tensions resurfaced on Sunday after the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) organised a motorcycle rally that defied the district administration's restrictions. The violence erupted between VHP and police officials despite the heavy deployment of police personnel, leading to 25 sustaining injuries, including eight police personnel.

VHP Calls For Bandh On Monday

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has called for a 12-hour bandh in protest of a clash that occurred during Durga Idol immersion due to a high-decibel DJ. The bandh is aimed at protesting what the VHP called administrative failure.
