Ladakh Violence: The Supreme Court on Monday is set to hear a plea filed by Ladakh's social activist Sonam Wangchuk's wife against his arrest last month following a massive violent protest in Leh. Wangchuk's wife filed the habeas corpus petition on October 2 under Article 32 of the Constitution following the activist's arrest on September 26. Wangchuk was arrested for allegedly provoking the youth that led to a violent protest in Leh in which the BJP and government offices were set on fire. However, Wangchuk ended his fast after the violence, adding that his motive completely failed as he has never endorsed violence.

Sonam Wangchuk was arrested on September 26 after the local authorities accused him of using provoking references during the protest. The authorities stated that the activist used remarks like "Gen Z's dissatisfaction," allegedly referring to the huge protest in Nepal by the youth. "On 24th September, at around 11.30 AM, a mob motivated by his provocative speeches left the venue of the hunger strike and attacked a political party office as well as the Government office of the CEC Leh. They also put these offices on fire, attacked the security personnel, and torched the police vehicle," stated the MHA.
Wangchuk's message from jail
Earlier on October 5, Wangchuk urged the people of Ladakh to protest peacefully, further demanding an inquiry into the killings of the protestors. “I am doing well, both physically and mentally, and thank everyone for their concern and prayers. My heartfelt condolences to the families of those people who lost their lives, and my prayers are with people who are injured and are arrested,” Wangchuk stated.
