Cyclone Ditwah Update: As many as four people have lost their lives to rain-related incidents that occurred across Tamil Nadu after Cyclone Ditwah hit the Indian coast. The cyclonic storm, which remained close to the Tamil Nadu coast, brought heavy rainfall in the state.
As per the information provided by the Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran on Tuesday, two people died due to electricity incidents, and two others lost their lives to a wall collapse. "Two people died in Mayiladuthurai and Villupuram due to electricity accidents, and two others in Thoothukudi and Thanjavur due to wall collapse,” said the Minister.
1,601 properties, including huts and houses, are damaged, besides 582 cattle have been lost, the Minister further informed while elaborating on the damages caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
Ramachandran said after the first spell of monsoon in October, 85,500 hectares of crops were damaged in Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore, and Thanjavur districts.
While the government has not announced any compensation to kin of people who lost their lives in rain-related incidents after Cyclone Ditwah yet, KKSSR said that the government would pay a compensation of Rs 20,000 per hectare for crop losses caused due to monsoon rain.
According to a report by NDTV, a 35-year-old farmer from Tiruvarur said that his paddy field, which spans over a few acres, is completely underwater, adding, "We spent Rs 35,000 an acre so far. In our village alone, we've lost crops on 15 acres of land." As per the farmer, the area has drainage issues that cause repeated crop losses in Kaavanur, Karuppur, Pachakkad, Suranur, and Tundathur villages.
Chennai Inundated As Heavy Rain Likely To Continue
The heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Ditwah has led to a flooding-like situation in several neighbourhoods of Chennai. In view of waterlogging on roads and potential disruptions to traffic, orders to close schools and colleges were issued.

Cyclone Ditwah To Move South-Westwards
As per the forecast the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Ditwah into a depression as of Tuesday evening and is likely to move towards the south southwest towards the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts slowly before weakening into a well-marked low-pressure system.
"154 relief camps are ready in Chennai. 11 NDRF teams continue to be deployed in Chennai to assist with relief efforts, with a total of 330 personnel," Ramachandran said.
