Delhi Air Pollution Curb: On the first day after ‘No PUC, No Fuel’ came into effect in Delhi to curb the worsening air quality across the national capital, thousands of vehicles were challaned while 61,000 vehicles secured PUC certificates.
Amid the strict enforcement of the directive, border checks were intensified, and surprise inspections were carried out as reports of uneven implementation erupted.
61000 PUC Certificates Issued
On December 16, the Environment Minister of Delhi, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, announced that vehicles with no valid PUCC (Pollution Under Control Certificate) will not be given fuel at the petrol pumps across the city, providing only 1 day for owners to comply with the new directive.
After the announcement, over 61,000 PUC certificates were issued in two days, between December 17 and 18. A total of 29,938 vehicles secured PUC certificates on Wednesday, and another 31,974 PUCs were issued on Thursday.
During the same period, 3,746 vehicles faced a Challan for not being able to produce PUC certificates.
Delhi’s Air Quality: Check Intensified On Delhi Border
Joint teams of Delhi traffic police and Transport Department carried out checks at Delhi’s entry points, turning back 568 non-compliant vehicles of a total of 5,000 vehicles inspected on the border, NDTV reported.
217 trucks were diverted via the Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressway.
On December 16, Sirsa announced restrictions for non-BS-6 and ‘No PUC’ vehicles, declaring that non-BS vehicles will not be allowed entry inside the national capital and vehicles without valid PUC certificates will not get fuel at petrol pumps across the city.
