Delhi News: After years of delay, the Delhi government has revived plans to construct multi-storey parking facilities at four major DTC bus depots. Despite several proposals over the last five years, no such structure has been built so far. Now, following a change in government, the administration has approved fresh redevelopment projects for the Hari Nagar, Vasant Vihar, Sukhdev Vihar and Banda Bahadur Marg depots.

Officials said the new proposals will soon be resubmitted to the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) for approval so that construction can begin at the earliest.

Project Funded By Developers, Not the Government

The redevelopment project will be executed by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC). Notably, the Delhi government will not bear any construction cost. Instead, private developers building the shopping complexes will fund the projects, while also providing parking spaces for Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses.

The initiative is aimed at boosting DTC’s revenue, which has been under financial stress for several years. Each complex will combine commercial spaces with multi-level parking areas to accommodate electric buses, private vehicles, and two-wheelers.

Sukhdev Vihar Depot To Get Multi-Level Electric Bus Parking

The long-pending redevelopment of the Sukhdev Vihar depot, first proposed a decade ago, is back on track. Spread across five acres, the depot currently houses around 100 buses. The upcoming facility will include multi-level parking for 300 electric buses, along with additional space for private vehicles on the ground level.

Banda Bahadur Marg Depot To Be City’s Largest

The Banda Bahadur Marg (BBM) depot, spread over 15 acres, will be the biggest of all. It will feature parking facilities for around 600 electric buses, as well as cars and two-wheelers to tackle local parking issues. A large commercial complex will also be developed on the premises to increase revenue.

Currently, about 100 buses operate from this depot, which also houses a DTC office.

Hari Nagar Depot to Accommodate 384 Electric Buses

The six-acre Hari Nagar depot will see a complete makeover. Once the project is complete, it will be able to accommodate up to 384 electric buses, an increase from the current capacity of 230 CNG buses.

The redevelopment will include a 7.4 lakh square-foot structure with three floors and a basement. The depot will also have 81 fast-charging stations capable of charging buses within 40 minutes, staff quarters, and a DTC office. Around two lakh square feet will be allocated for commercial space.

Vasant Vihar Project Awaits DDA Nod

The Vasant Vihar depot project, initiated last year, remains pending due to a delay in DDA approval. The site covers about five acres and is designed to feature a seven-storey building with 2.6 lakh square feet of basement parking. It will have space for around 690 vehicles and retail units. The original project cost of Rs 409 crore is expected to rise.

Awaiting DDA Clearance For Construction To Begin

As the land for all four depots is leased from the DDA, the government requires a no-objection certificate before starting construction. “We are planning to convert four DTC depots into shopping complexes with multi-storey parking. The DTC has been asked to submit a revised proposal to the DDA,” said Delhi Transport Minister Dr Pankaj Singh.

He added that the government hopes to receive clearance soon so work on the long-delayed project can finally begin.
