Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched the first Green Hydrogen fuel cell bus in Delhi on Monday, as part of the ministry’s initiatives to promote green hydrogen production and utilisation in the country. He said hydrogen is the future fuel that can help India achieve its decarbonisation goals and meet the growing demand for clean energy.

The union minister informed that 15 more fuel cell buses will be operational in the NCR region soon. The green hydrogen bus is a zero-emission vehicle that uses hydrogen and air to produce electricity to power the bus, with water as the only by-product.

"This green hydrogen-powered bus is going to transform the face of city transport in the country. I shall be closely monitoring the project and wish you all the very best for successfully executing this project of national importance," he said as quoted by news agency ANI.

The bus has a high fuel efficiency of 12 km per kg of hydrogen, compared to 2.5-3 km per litre of diesel buses. The bus can also be refilled quickly, similar to fossil fuel vehicles. The fuel cell has an electrical efficiency of 55-60 per cent, which is much higher than the thermal efficiency of 25 per cent for conventional internal combustion engines.

He also stated that the ministry is working on various projects related to hydrogen blending in natural gas pipelines, localisation of electrolyzer-based technologies and promotion of bio-pathways for green hydrogen production.
