In an unfortunate incident, four people lost their lives while one was injured after a tree fell on a tubewell room built on a farm in Delhi's Dwarka during the early hours of Friday.

According to the Delhi Police, the incident was reported from a farm in Kharkhari Canal village in Dwarka. The tree was uprooted due to strong surface winds and heavy rainfall that lashed the national capital on Friday morning.

The deceased have been identified as a 26-year-old woman named Jyoti and her three children. Her husband, Ajay, sustained injuries and was under treatment.

Providing details about the incident, a Delhi Fire Services official said, "We received a call regarding a house collapse in Kharkari Nahar village in Najafgarh at 5.25 am. We deployed multiple teams on the spot, and four people were rescued from the rubble." He added that he had informed the police about the casualties in the tragic incident.

Heavy rains were witnessed in Delhi and the nearby region causing massive waterlogging at places, including Minto Bridge, Dwarka underpass, ITO, Lajpat Nagar and RK Puram, among others. Although the rain brought a major respite from the scorching heat, it led to casualties in Dwarka.

The sudden change in weather also affected flight operations at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. Initially, three flights were diverted to Jaipur and Ahmedabad due to inclement weather while several others were delayed. However, almost half-an-hour later, the airport reported that the flight operation was normalised.

The Indian Meteorological Department, in its fresh forecast, alerted for severe weather over the Delhi-NCR. It said that the uprooting of trees, damage to power and communication lines, injuries to cattle, and damage to vulnerable structures, kutcha houses, are expected due to a change in weather. It has advised people to keep a watch on developing weather conditions. Apart from that, the IMD has advised staying indoors and avoiding travelling if possible.

The residents must take safe shelters and avoid standing under trees. It added that people must not venture into water bodies and unplug electrical and electronic appliances if not in use.
