Malviya Nagar Fire: At least 21 people were killed, and 31 others were rescued after a massive fire broke out at a restaurant building in South Delhi's Malviya Nagar on Wednesday morning.

The blaze erupted around 8:50 AM at the Lemon Green restaurant in the Hauz Rani area, quickly spreading through the premises and trapping several people inside.

Video Shows Woman Jumping Off Building

In a desperate attempt to escape the flames and thick smoke, at least two women were seen jumping from the building. Videos from the scene showed the women jumping from the building onto the road in front of the hotel to save their lives.

Locals can be seen rushing to help them as they landed on mattresses laid out by residents to cushion those trapped.

Another visual from the scene showed firefighters, police personnel, and local residents scrambling to rescue those trapped inside the restaurant building. Several victims were seen being rushed to ambulances.

'Jumped From Third Floor With Kid'

Speaking to news agency ANI, a local resident named Sher Khan said, "I was going to the shop in the morning. There was a small fire here at first, then it kept increasing. As the fire increased, it seemed as if there was no way to jump from here. People spread mattresses, and some from the 3rd floor jumped on it with a little kid... She was saying that she fractured her leg. The public made a lot of effort. However, the situation becomes intense as time passes..."

Restaurant Located In Basement Of Building

The restaurant was located in the basement of the building, where the fire broke out and spread rapidly, engulfing the entire building. There was also a guest house above the restaurant, which housed foreign nationals. Seeing the raging fire, many people jumped from the building to save their lives. 10 fire engines were rushed to the scene following the incident. Divisional Officer (DO) Ravinder from Nehru Place (NRN) fire station has also reached the spot.

PM Modi Announces Ex-Gratia

PM Modi condoled the loss of lives in the Malviya Nagar fire incident and announced ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.

CM Rekha Gupta Reacts To Fire Incident

"My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured and for strength & courage to all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy," the CM posted on X.
