Jagran Correspondent, South Delhi: At least 21 people were killed while 47 others were rescued after a fire broke out on Wednesday morning at Lemon Green restaurant in Hauz Rani area, a locality adjacent to Malviya Nagar in South Delhi. Some people are still feared trapped, Jagran reported. Rescue operations are currently underway. The cause of the fire is not yet known. 

Restaurant Located In Basement Of Building

The restaurant was located in the basement of the building, where the fire broke out and spread rapidly, engulfing the entire building. There was also a guest house above the restaurant, which housed foreign nationals. Seeing the raging fire, many people jumped from the building to escape. 10 fire engines were rushed to the scene following the incident. Divisional Officer (DO) Ravinder from Nehru Place (NRN) fire station has also reached the spot.

As per former AAP MLA Somnath Bharti, the fire broke out due to a short circuit at 8 am. However, Delhi Fire Services (DFS) was alerted about the incident at around 9:45 am. Bharti also demanded compensation of Rs 1 crore each to the families of the victims.

Somnath Bharti, said, "The fire broke out due to a short circuit at 8 am today. The fire spread to the kitchen and then to the upper floors of the adjoining hotel. I am also involved in the rescue operation here. Several people suffered due to gas and smoke. We expect the Delhi govt to give compensation of Rs 1 crore each to the families of the victims and probe the matter."

Jitendra Kumar, SDM, DDMA, South District, said, "We activated the DDMA cell as soon as we received a call. We have come to know that a restaurant was operating on the ground floor of this building."

"The cause of the fire is still not known. 7-8 people, including the injured, have been taken to the hospital for treatment. Some people from the floors above jumped out of the building on the mattresses laid on the road by the locals," he added.

Three Stuck In Basement Saved

Acting swiftly, the fire brigade team safely rescued the three people trapped in the basement and admitted them to a nearby hospital. Those rescued were rushed to the hospital via CATS Ambulance.

"My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured and for strength & courage to all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy," the CM posted on X.
