Delhi's Lieutenant Governor (LG), VK Saxena, has taken a significant step toward enhancing the city’s public transportation system. On Wednesday, he directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to begin surveying and selecting sites for the installation of ropeways or cableways across the Yamuna River. This initiative aims to provide a sustainable, non-polluting mode of transportation that would allow passengers to travel in cable cars, reducing the environmental footprint of the city's transport infrastructure.

The decision follows a recent meeting chaired by LG Saxena, where alternative non-polluting transport modes were explored to address the city's ongoing traffic congestion and pollution issues. The introduction of ropeways/cableways is expected to ease travel in heavily congested areas, especially in regions that are difficult to access through traditional transport methods.

“This initiative will not only provide a non-polluting mode of river crossing but will also encourage walking as part of daily routines, fostering healthier lifestyles,” LG V K Saxena stated in the press release.

DDA To Identify Sites For Ropeway Installation

LG also emphasised the importance of prioritising pedestrian accessibility, citing examples like Baansera and Asita, where parking is deliberately placed far from main park areas to encourage walking and enhance physical fitness.

DDA has been entrusted with the task of identifying appropriate locations for the installation of these systems. Once the surveys are completed, the project will move forward with detailed planning, including safety and environmental considerations. The ropeway system is expected to provide an efficient, cost-effective, and eco-friendly solution for urban mobility in the city.

This initiative aligns with Delhi's broader goals of improving air quality and reducing carbon emissions. The LG’s move is also part of the larger vision to modernise Delhi’s public transport infrastructure by introducing innovative solutions to meet the growing needs of the city’s population.
