Delhi News: The much-awaited Anand Vihar flyover and the Punjabi Bagh road corridor redevelopment projects are expected to be ready for public use by the end of August and September, respectively, according to officials overseeing the developments.
According to Times Of India report, the civil work for both projects is reported to be mostly complete, with beautification work currently underway at the Anand Vihar site. The Punjabi Bagh project, designed to alleviate traffic congestion in West Delhi, is also nearing its final stages.
However, the main flyover at Punjabi Bagh, spanning approximately 1.3 kilometres with six lanes between the ESI metro station and Club Road, is still under construction. The initial deadline of January has been extended multiple times, with the latest target set for September.
"One portion of the project, the Moti Nagar flyover, was opened by the government in March, but the main section remains incomplete," a source involved in the project explained.
The delays in both projects have been attributed Deto various challenges. At the Anand Vihar flyover, the lack of permission to cut trees has hindered the completion of side ramps and a pedestrian footpath, which are now unlikely to be finished by the time the flyover opens.
Previously, the Anand Vihar-Road No. 56 area was also classified as a deemed forest, leading to a complete halt in work and resulting in a penalty on the Public Works Department.
The Anand Vihar flyover project was initially planned in 2019 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The foundation stone was laid in October 2022 by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel.
As part of the city's decongestion plan, the Delhi government has identified 77 such traffic hotspots and is working to address the issues through road redesigning and flyover construction.
