Delhi News: The Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) has started work on a new road corridor in the Narela area to reduce long-standing traffic congestion. The project includes the construction of a flyover and an underpass near the Khera Kalan railway crossing, officials said on Tuesday.

The corridor will stretch for nearly one kilometre and is expected to significantly improve vehicle movement in the area, especially during peak hours.

Bottleneck At Railway Crossing

At present, traffic often comes to a halt at the Khera Kalan manned railway crossing, which lies on the Delhi-Ambala railway line. Officials said frequent train movements at this point lead to heavy congestion, causing delays for commuters.

The new infrastructure is aimed at removing this bottleneck by allowing vehicles to bypass the railway line without interruption.

Work To Be Shared Between PWD and Railways

Officials said the project will be executed jointly by the PWD and the Railways. While the flyover construction will be handled by the PWD, all work related to the underpass near the railway tracks will be carried out by the railway department. A tender has already been issued for the flyover component.

Features Of The Road Corridor

The complete road corridor will include a four-lane flyover, an underpass, two U-turns, a footpath and a pedestrian ramp connecting the underpass to the main road above. The underpass will be designed for light vehicles, with a height of three metres and a width of five metres, along with retaining walls on both sides.

Once completed, officials said the project will improve connectivity and road safety in the area.

Timeline And Cost

The construction is expected to be completed within one and a half years. The estimated cost of the project is around Rs 94 crore.

Long-Pending Plan

The project is part of a larger plan announced in 2015 to replace manned railway crossings in northwest Delhi with grade separators to reduce congestion. A feasibility study for the Narela project was conducted in 2020, followed by approval from the Delhi Urban Arts Commission in 2021. Officials said design changes were made in 2022 before the work was finalised.

The flyover and underpass will connect directly to the Khera Kalan traffic junction, easing movement for daily commuters.
