Two people died after a massive fire broke out in a furniture market in Delhi's Kirti Nagar area on Sunday morning. Police said the two individuals were unable to escape and died due to suffocation after the fire engulfed the area. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control after several hours of effort.
According to officials, the victims, identified as 45-year-old Atul Rai from Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh and 65-year-old Nand Kishore Dubey from Bihar’s Gaya, were sleeping inside the shop when the fire broke out. Rai worked as a labourer on the premises, while Dubey was a rickshaw driver. Both succumbed to smoke inhalation as they were unable to escape in time.
The Kirti Nagar police received the fire alert at around 4:30 am, dispatching seven fire engines to the site. The fire was eventually controlled and an FSL (Forensic Science Laboratory) team was called to investigate the cause of the fire.
In a related incident, a firecracker ignited a fire in a house in East Delhi’s Jagatpuri area on Friday night. Fire brigade personnel alerted at 10:07 pm, arrived with four engines and managed to extinguish the flames within an hour. The fire affected two floors of a building with an office on the ground floor and plastic storage on the upper floors. Fortunately, no one was present at the site during the incident.
Amid widespread rule-breaking Diwali celebrations, Delhi saw a surge in fire-related emergencies. The fire department received 318 calls on Diwali, the highest in 13 years and over 400 calls the following day, with more than 365 directly related to fires.
Fire department director Atul Garg reported that Friday’s call volume was unprecedented, including numerous fires in garbage areas. He added that no casualties were reported as firefighting teams effectively controlled the incidents.
