Delhi Floods: The Yamuna River in Delhi has crossed the danger mark due to heavy rainfall in the hills. On Monday afternoon, the water level of the Yamuna River crossed the danger mark of 205.33 meters. It is expected to reach over 206 meters by Tuesday. Once the water level reaches this point, vehicular and train traffic on the Old Railway Bridge is expected to be suspended.
River Streams Are Not Dangerous: UT Administration
The administration has stated that despite the rising water level, the likelihood of flooding similar to 2023 is not expected. The flow of the Yamuna River is stable, and therefore, the water is not spreading to the khadar area. However, people living in the khadar area are reluctant to leave their homes and move to safer locations even when the danger is imminent, Jagran.com reported.
Delhi Floods Update
Sandeep Yadav, SDM of Preet Vihar and Nodal Officer, stated that the water level of the Yamuna River crossed the danger mark on Monday. The Yamuna River crossed the danger mark for the first time last Tuesday.
64,000 Cusecs Water Released From Hathinikund Barrage
On Monday, over 64,000 cusecs of water were released from the Hathinikund Barrage into Delhi, while 89,000 cusecs of water were released from the Okhla Barrage into UP.
Delhi Yamuna Water Level Expected To Rise Further
The water released from Haryana on Sunday evening, amounting to 1.78 lakh cusecs, is expected to reach Delhi by Tuesday. This is likely to push the water level of the Yamuna River to 206 meters. The administration has been announcing warnings in the Yamuna khadar and nearby low-lying areas since Sunday, appealing to people to move to safer locations.
Delhi Floods: Precautionary Measures Underway
- Temporary shelters are being set up at DND Flyover, NH-24, and Mayur Vihar for people affected by the rising water level.
- Motorboats have been stationed at 14 different locations. The administration is appealing to people not to venture near the Yamuna River due to the strong current.
- The police have been instructed to keep a watch on roads leading to the Yamuna River.
- All gates of the Wazirabad, Okhla, and ATO barrages have been opened.
Yamuna Water Level Set Record Two Years Ago
In 2023, the water level of the Yamuna River in Delhi reached 208.66 meters, setting a new record. At that time, water flooded several areas, including Kashmiri Gate, Civil Lines, and Outer Ring Road, and remained for several days. The highest water level recorded since 1978 was in 2023, when it reached 208.66 meters.
