Dhul Hijjah Moon Sighting: Dhul Hijjah is the 12th and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, 1447 AH, and holds immense religious significance for Muslims around the world. The sacred month is linked to the annual Hajj pilgrimage and Eid-ul-Adha, or Bakrid, which is marked by the ritual of Qurbani (sacrifice).

Eid al-Adha will be celebrated in India on Thursday, May 28, instead of Wednesday, May 27, after the crescent moon marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah was not sighted on Sunday.

Moon-sighting committees across the Muslim world are continuing their observations for the start of Dhu Al Hijjah 1447 AH, with several countries still awaiting official confirmation.

In Kolkata, the Ruet-e-Hilal committee announced that the crescent moon was not sighted, meaning the month of Dhul Qadah will complete 30 days.

“Eid ul Azha moon not sighted. Insha Allah... Eid ul Azha will be celebrated on Thursday (May 28, 2026),” the Masjid-E-Nakhoda Markazi Rooyat-E-Hilal Committee said in a statement.

The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has requested people to observe the crescent moon with the naked eye or using binoculars and telescopes. Those who spot the moon have been asked to report the sighting to the nearest court and officially register their testimony.

Why Dhul Hijjah Moon Is Important?

In the Islamic calendar, the beginning of every month is confirmed only after the crescent moon is sighted. However, the Dhul Hijjah moon carries special importance because it also signals the start of Hajj preparations in Saudi Arabia.

During this period, Saudi Arabia gears up to welcome thousands of pilgrims from around the world for Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam.

When Will Dhul Hijjah 2026 Begin?

The Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH is expected to begin in India on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, as the crescent moon was not sighted on Sunday, May 17. Since Dhul Qadah will now complete 30 days, the new month is likely to commence the following day after fresh moon-sighting efforts on Monday evening.

However, the final confirmation regarding the beginning of Dhul Hijjah will be announced by local moon-sighting committees and mosques after Maghrib prayers.

When Is Eid-ul-Adha 2026 Likely To Be Celebrated?

Eid al-Adha will be celebrated in India on Thursday, May 28, instead of Wednesday, May 27, after the crescent moon marking the beginning of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah was not sighted on Sunday, May 17.

As the moon was not visible, the sighting process will continue the following evening, making May 28 the probable date for Bakrid celebrations in India.

Muslims have been advised to wait for official announcements after Maghrib prayers from local moon-sighting committees and nearby mosques regarding the commencement of Dhul Hijjah and the confirmation of Eid-ul-Adha celebrations.
