Diwali 2025: As environmental and health-safety concerns increase around the festive season, green firecrackers have emerged as a viable alternative, aiming to reduce pollution. These firecrackers are manufactured by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI). Green crackers have been branded as an eco-conscious alternative, designed to release significantly fewer pollutants while preserving the traditional sound and visual appeal of fireworks.
These environmentally friendlier variants help cut down emissions of hazardous substances such as barium, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide by 30 to 60 per cent. But where are these crackers primarily manufactured in India, and what does their annual market look like?
Let’s break it down.

Where Are Green Firecrackers Made?
The majority of licensed green cracker production is based in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. All the manufacturers of green firecrackers have to adhere to the rules and regulations approved by CSIR-NEERI.
How Much Revenue Does The Firecracker Industry Accrue?
India’s firecracker industry contributes a whopping Rs 6,000 crore, as per Jagran.com. However, with the adoption of green firecrackers, there is a gradual shift in the firecracker industry, which has long dominated the traditional products.
But the annual sales of traditional firecrackers still hover between 70,000 to 80,000 tons. Despite this huge sale, the market share of the traditional industry is declining by 12-15 per cent every year.
On the other hand, the demand for green crackers has been steadily rising, with annual sales increasing by around 20 per cent, reaching an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 tons. The market value of these eco-friendlier fireworks is projected to be between Rs 1,800 and Rs 2,000 crore.
The sale of green firecrackers is expected to increase with legal obligations on traditional firecrackers. Recently, the Supreme Court allowed the bursting of green firecrackers which will boost up the sale of these eco-friendly firecrackers.

How Are Green Firecrackers Made?
Unlike conventional firecrackers, green firecrackers exclude the use of polluting elements like barium nitrate and have reduced levels of aluminum and sulfur. These reduced quantities help in the reduction of the sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels. It also leads to a reduction in reducing nearly 30 per cent of noise pollution.
