The ambitious Dwarka Expressway project, which aims to reduce the traffic pressure on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway is facing delays and challenges. Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari had announced that the project would be completed by the end of this year, but the ground reality is that even the Gurugram part is not expected to be operational till December. The construction work is still pending at many places in the Gurugram part and the vehicles cannot move ahead due to incomplete work in the Delhi area.
The project is divided into four parts, two in Gurugram and two in Delhi. The Gurugram part was supposed to be commissioned in May, but it is still under construction. The Delhi part is also lagging behind, with a 3.6-kilometre-long tunnel being built to connect it to Delhi Airport.
The project is the smallest expressway in the country, with 18.9 kilometres in Gurugram and 10.1 kilometres in Delhi. It will have 23 kilometres of elevated portion and four kilometres of underground portion.
The Dwarka Expressway Welfare Association President Yashish Yadav said that people are very disappointed with the working pattern of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). He said that NHAI should start the Gurugram part by connecting it to the Najafgarh-Bijwasan road on the Delhi border so that the traffic movement can move ahead.
He stated that the project will benefit about 10 lakh people directly and reduce the traffic pressure on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway by 40 per cent. He also said that the project will use two lakh metric tons of steel and 20 lakh cum of concrete, which are 30 times and six times more than the construction of the Eiffel Tower and Burj Khalifa respectively.
