Bengaluru is aiming to reduce traffic congestion with the coming Eastern Connectivity Tunnel, which will make travel to Kempegowda International Airport faster and more convenient. This tunnel, which is set to begin construction later this year, intends to reduce commuter travel time by about 30 minutes, particularly for those coming from Whitefield, Sarjapur, and Mahadevapura.

Currently, the tunnel forms an integral link to a large upgrade project by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) at an investment of Rs 16,500 crore towards development of better facilities at the airport. This new facility is to meet the increased demand for flying which is estimated to be achieved at 85 million passengers annually by 2030-32. Under this project, BIAL is also going to add two new metro stations at the airport, improve its taxiway system and add a third terminal for more passengers.

He emphasised that the project is critical in tackling Bengaluru's continued traffic issues, even after the advent of metro services.

Deputy CM Shivakumar remarked, "The underground Eastern Connectivity Tunnel project will start in the first half of 2025. This will solve Bengaluru's traffic problems and ease daily commutes for thousands of citizens."
