Bihar Assembly Elections: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday announced the new guidelines for the design and printing of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) ballot papers. These changes, which come ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections, aim to improve the clarity of EVM ballot papers to make them more user-friendly and readable.

The poll body said that starting with the Bihar Assembly Elections, the EVMs will feature colour photographs of the candidates. It added that the candidate’s face will occupy three-fourths of the photo space to enhance visibility. The EVM upgraded ballot paper will be introduced in the upcoming elections, beginning with Bihar.

“The Election Commission of India (ECI) has revised the existing guidelines under Rule 49B of the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961, for the design and printing of EVM Ballot Papers to enhance their clarity and readability,” Times of India quoted EC as saying.

The poll body also directed that candidates' serial numbers should be printed in the international form of Indian numerals. Additionally, the candidate's name should appear in the same font with a larger font size to ensure readability.

In addition to this, the EC said that the EVM ballot paper should be printed on 70 GSM paper. For Assembly Elections, pink coloured paper with RGB values will be used.

"The initiative is in line with the 28 initiatives already taken by the ECI in the past 6 months to streamline and improve election processes and enhance convenience for voters," the poll body added.
