Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has changed its stance on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill a day after opposing it in Lok Sabha. Initially, after the bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha, the BJD took a stand against it. However, despite its opposition, the bill was passed in the Lok Sabha.

Now, when the bill has been tabled in Rajya Sabha for debate, the BJD has asked its MPs to use their conscience before taking sides. The party has made it clear that no whip will be issued for voting.

“The Biju Janata Dal has always upheld the principles of secularism and inclusivity, ensuring the rights of all communities. We deeply respect the diverse sentiments expressed by different sections of the Minority communities regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024,” the party’s spokesperson Sasmit Patra posted on X.

“Our Party, having taken these views into careful consideration, has entrusted our Hon’ble Members in the Rajya Sabha with the responsibility of exercising their conscience in the best interest of justice, harmony and the rights of all communities, should the Bill come up for voting. There is no Party Whip,” he added.

The Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the Waqf Amendment Bill after a fervid debate of over 11 hours. As many as 288 MPs voted in favour of the bill while 232 lawmakers opposed it.
