Fauja Singh Death: A Canada-based man who allegedly ran over the world's oldest marathoner, Fauja Singh, has reportedly told police that he came to know about the deceased's identity through news reports. Amritpal Singh, the accused, revealed that he did not stop after hitting Singh because he got afraid. He further stated that he was not aware of the identity of the victim until he saw the media reports, reported NDTV, citing sources. The Punjab police on Tuesday night arrested the accused from his village in Kartarpur after tracking the CCTV cameras and other leads. The 26-year-old accused had allegedly run over 'Turbaned Tornado' on a highway in Jalandhar district on Monday.
While providing details, senior police officer Harvinder Singh Virk stated that the vehicle has also been seized. He further informed that Amritpal had come to India on June 23. He had crossed the speed limit on the highway as he was reportedly in a hurry, leading to the tragic road accident.
"He got scared after hitting Fauja Singh, and that is why he did not stop his car at the spot," Virk told reporters. However, he also emphasised that the accused should have stopped and admitted the victim to a nearby hospital.
The police officials had stated that they gathered broken parts of the car and showed them to the experts, leading to the arrest of the accused. "We found some parts of the car from the crime scene. The pieces were then shown to the experts, who said the vehicle was an old model of a Toyota Fortuner," Virk stated.
"When we scanned the CCTV, the part recovered was missing from a Fortuner vehicle. We were then confident that the accident happened with the said vehicle," he added. Several prominent personalities, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have expressed grief over the death of Fauja Singh.
