Flight Cancellation Rules: Popular Indian air carrier IndiGo has been facing a technical difficulty for the past few days, which has caused severe disruptions in the flight schedules of several passengers. On Thursday, 300 IndiGo flights were cancelled, affecting passengers nationwide.

Earlier on Thursday morning, December 4, Delhi saw more than 95 flight cancellations, while Bengaluru experienced about 50, including 41 arrivals. Mumbai reported 85 cancellations, and Hyderabad recorded 70. 

In addition, there were cancellations at other airports, sources told PTI. Based on data from six key airports, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, IndiGo's on-time performance (OTP) nosedived to 19.7 per cent on Wednesday, down from 35 per cent on December 2.

How Do You Know Your Flight Is Delayed?

Not all delays are equal or ‘significant’ in the eyes of airline regulations. In India, a ‘significant’ delay is considered only when a domestic flight is delayed for more than 2 hours. In the case of international flights, the threshold time increased to 3+ hours. However, airline usually have their own internal policies where the threshold time is much less.

Flight Cancellation Rules In India

  • If your flight is delayed, you are entitled to cash compensation ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 for domestic flights and up to 600 euros for cancelled flight delays on EU routes.

  • You are also eligible for alternative transportation, including rebooking on other airlines. 

  • If you do not wish to travel through the ticket, then you are entitled to a 100 per cent subject to the specific rules of the airlines.

  • In case of a delay of over 2 hours, airlines are typically entitled to free meals, refreshments and in some cases communication facilities. 

  • If the delay extends overnight, the airline should provide hotel accommodation and transportation.

  • Some airlines also provide lounge access, meal vouchers, or even spa services.
