Telangana Floods: Authorities were prompted to issue flood warnings after water level in the Godavari River touched 48 ft in the temple town of Bhadrachalam at 2:09 pm on Monday. The Bhadrachalam Revenue Divisional Officer has issued a fax message to the Bhadrachalam ITDA Project Officer and Bhadradri Kothagudem Collector and District Magistrate in this regard. A second warning has been issued, indicating further rise and all officers have been advised to take necessary action.
"Godavari Floods 2024, Bhadradri Kothagudem District, Bhadrachalam Division & Mandal, Godavari Water Level reached 48' feet (forty-eight feet) on July 22, 2024, at 2:09 pm. Second warning issued, forecast indicates further rise, all the flood duty officers take action as per the Godavari flood manual," the Revenue Divisional Officer said, as quoted by news agency ANI.
Earlier, district collector Jitesh V Patil asked people in low-lying areas to vacate in case of an emergency as water level is on the rise. A control room has been set up at the collectorate with phone numbers 08744-241950 and 9392919743 to reach out to those affected.
The district administration is already on high alert, in view of 2022 massive floods when the Godavari level touched 70 ft in Bhadrachalam and inundated several colonies and villages for several days. At 4 pm on Saturday, the water level rose to 34.90 ft in Bhadrachalam in Bhadradri Kothagudem district. The first warning was issued at the 43 ft mark. The third warning will be sounded at 53 ft.
Severe floods occurred in 1986 when the water level reached 75.60 ft and the discharge was 27 lakh cusecs. In 2022, the water level reached a maximum of 71.30 ft and the discharge was 21.78 lakh cusecs.
