The recent resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar has marked a significant shift in the NDA’s political strategy, with the nomination of CP Radhakrishnan as the alliance’s Vice Presidential candidate. This transition from Dhankhar to Radhakrishnan is more than just a change in personalities, it indicates a larger reconsideration of the BJP's outreach efforts, not only towards the South, but also in terms of ideology and regional approach.

The announcement was made during a media briefing by BJP President JP Nadda after a meeting of the party’s parliamentary board.

Radhakrishnan’s candidature has already drawn attention and even some support from opposition leaders welcoming the move. His nomination is being seen as a strategic step to bolster the BJP’s presence in South India and among OBC communities areas where the party is still working to gain solid ground, particularly beyond Karnataka.

BJP's Southern Strategy In Focus?

Radhakrishnan brings remarkably different style to the table compared to his predecessor. While Dhankhar was known for his sharp, confrontational approach especially in legal and parliamentary affairs Radhakrishnan is regarded as a softer, more inclusive leader. According to Jagran.com, this shift in tone is indicative of a larger change in BJP’s internal strategy.

Back in 2022, Dhankhar was chosen as a calculated move to appeal to the Jat community during a time of growing unrest. His selection was meant to assure the community that their concerns were being addressed. In contrast, Radhakrishnan’s nomination reflects the BJP’s focus on ideological consolidation and geographical expansion especially into Tamil Nadu and other southern states where the party still lacks deep roots.

Here's What Makes CP Radhakrishnan BJP's Strategic Pick

- Radhakrishnan, a veteran Tamil Nadu leader, has decades of experience in southern politics. He has handled political tensions in the state with tact, especially when facing criticism from the ruling DMK. Recently, he met with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin and responded calmly to Udhayanidhi Stalin’s remarks on Sanatana Dharma by dismissing them lightly, saying, “He’s a child.”

- His approach in Maharashtra has been equally organised. He dealt with opposition concerns over the controversial Public Security Bill with ideological clarity and administrative competence, cementing his reputation as a capable and balanced leader.

- Interestingly, even some opposition leaders have responded positively to his nomination. DMK MP TKS Elangovan told NDTV, “It is a welcome move. He (Radhakrishnan) is a Tamilian and after a long time a Tamilian may become the Vice President of India. INDIA bloc also has its own choice, and DMK will go by the decision of the alliance.” The Jharkhand Congress too has welcomed the NDA’s decision, suggesting that Radhakrishnan’s profile may appeal across party lines.

- One of the key differences between Radhakrishnan and Dhankhar lies in their ideological backgrounds. Dhankhar, though politically active and experienced, was not closely connected with the RSS. He was often seen as a more pragmatic face within the BJP, chosen for his regional influence.

- Radhakrishnan, on the other hand, has been associated with the Bharatiya Jan Sangh and RSS since the age of 17. His long-standing ideological commitment adds weight to his candidature and strengthens the party’s alignment with its core values.

- While Dhankhar’s appeal was rooted in caste and regional calculations, Radhakrishnan’s nomination presents him as a more nationally inclusive figure, someone who reflects both ideological loyalty and a broader geographical representation.

- CP Radhakrishnan is expected to file his nomination on August 21. According to The Times of India, all NDA Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers have been called to Delhi to participate in the nomination process, underlining the political importance of this moment for the BJP-led alliance.

- The development comes following the BJP Parliamentary meeting on Sunday, which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and others.

- While making the announcement BJP chief JP Nadda said, “He has a 40-year of experience in politics and wore many hats,” BJP President JP Nadda said during the announcement. The decision was taken at a BJP Parliamentary meeting attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other senior leaders.

- The election for the Vice President’s office became necessary after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21, citing health reasons in his letter to President Droupadi Murmu.

- The Election Commission has scheduled the Vice Presidential election for September 9. Given the NDA’s majority in the Electoral College which includes members from both Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha
