The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday announced that Maharashtra Governor and one of the party’s most prominent party’s leaders from Tamil Nadu, CP Radhakrishnan, will be the NDA’s candidate for the Vice President post. The election for the Vice President post will take place on September 9, and August 21 will be the last date for filing nominations, the Election Commission said.

“He has a 40-year of experience in politics and wore many hats,” BJP chief JP Nadda said while making the announcement. The development comes following the BJP Parliamentary meeting on Sunday, which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and others.

- Chandrapuram Ponnuswamy Radhakrishnan, or CP Radhakrishnan, was sworn in as the Governor of Maharashtra on July 31, 2024.
- Prior to this, he was the Governor of Jharkhand for nearly one and a half years. He has also served as the State President of the BJP in Tamil Nadu between 2004 to 2007.
- He has been a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the ideological mentor of the BJP, since the age of 16, and also served as a State Executive Committee Member of the Bharatiya Janasangh in 1974.
- During his tenure as MP in Tamil Nadu, he served as Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Textiles, member of the Parliamentary Committee for Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and the Consultative Committee for Finance.
- Radhakrishnan was born on October 20, 1957, in Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu. He has pursued a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration.
- Apart from a political career, Radhakrishnan was a college champion in table tennis and a long-distance runner, the Maharashtra Governor's website stated.
