Geminids Meteor Shower 2025: India will witness the Geminid meteor shower, one of the most reliable and breathtaking celestial events of the year. From December 13 to 15, stargazers in dark, clear areas can expect to see more than 100 meteors per hour, with dazzling trails that could easily be mistaken for a scene from a movie. Unlike most meteor showers that originate from comets, the Geminids come from the rocky asteroid 3200 Phaethon, giving them their unique, bright, and chunky streaks across the sky.

While you don’t need to track down Gemini specifically, knowing it will climb higher as the night progresses can help you plan your viewing. Experts suggest observing for at least an hour since meteors often appear in bursts, and your eyes need time to adjust to the dark.

To get the most out of this cosmic beauty, it’s important to find a location away from artificial light. The darker the surroundings, the better the experience. Great spots include a rooftop with minimal lighting, a field in a quiet village, an open park, or a viewpoint in the hills. Ensure your view is unobstructed trees or buildings can block the sight of meteors streaking across the sky.

You won’t need a telescope or binoculars for this show, as they’ll limit your field of view. Instead, lie back comfortably on a mat or reclining chair, bundle up in warm clothes, and put away your phone for 20-30 minutes before you start observing to help your eyes adjust to the darkness. If you must use a flashlight, cover it with red cellophane to protect your night vision.
