In a heartbreaking incident on Wednesday afternoon, a three-year-old girl was killed and her parents critically injured when a giant eucalyptus tree fell on their home. The incident occurred next to the Forest Department office complex, adjacent to the police station.
The tree, which was reportedly being cut down by the Forest Department, crashed onto the adjacent houses, causing massive destruction.
The Incident
The tragedy took place at approximately 4:30 PM. According to villagers, the Forest Department was in the process of cutting down the giant eucalyptus tree when it suddenly fell in the wrong direction, landing directly on the houses of Maria Devi and Goyanda Kachhap, and crushing a Wagon R car belonging to Anil Oraon.
Casualties
Locals rushed to the spot, removed the debris, and pulled out the family trapped underneath. They were rushed to the Bero Community Health Centre (CHC).
Deceased: Anu Kachhap (3 years old) was declared dead upon arrival by Dr. Suman Ekka.
Injured: Her father, Vimal Kachhap, and mother, Roshni Gop, sustained serious injuries and were referred to RIMS for advanced treatment.
Ambulance Unavailable: Forest Guard Steps In
In a display of systemic failure followed by individual initiative, no ambulance or vehicle was available at the CHC to transport the critically injured couple to RIMS.
The Rescue: Forest Guard Ravishankar Machhli stepped forward and transported the injured couple to RIMS in his private vehicle.
Severe Property Damage
The collapse caused extensive property damage. Maria Devi, one of the victims, stated that the falling tree completely demolished the walls and roof of her house.
Losses: Furniture, electronics, grain, and other household items were destroyed.
Winter Struggle: Maria Devi expressed despair over the loss, noting the severe difficulty the family will now face in finding shelter during the harsh winter.
Official Response
Upon receiving information, Circle Officer (CO) Raj Kunwar Singh visited the site and the Forest Department office to inspect the situation.
Local representatives, including Panchayat Mukhiya Sushanti Bhagat, Sushil Bhagat, former Block Pramukh Mahto Bhagat, and Raju Mahli, arrived at the CHC along with armed personnel from the Bero police station to inquire about the condition of the injured and facilitate their transfer to RIMS.
