Goa Nightclub Fire Latest Update: The four-member panel investigating the devastating fire at the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, North Goa, which claimed 25 lives, has submitted its report. The findings into the December 6 tragedy expose serious lapses by the local panchayat and key government bodies, including the Goa Pollution Control Board (PCB) and the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA).
Lapses Reported In Goa Night Club Fire
The club’s trade license had expired in March 2024, yet the local panchayat neither sealed the premises nor halted its operations. Although a demolition order was issued, no action was taken before a stay order came into effect. The property, existing since 1996, had previously housed two restaurants, highlighting a pattern of longstanding oversight.
The inquiry points to systemic failures spanning several years, with the judicial commission noting that construction occurred in an eco-sensitive salt pan area and without an occupancy certificate.
The investigation also questioned how multiple clearances were issued despite complaints. Trade, excise, and food safety licenses, as well as permissions from the Pollution Control Board and three separate NOCs from the panchayat, were granted without proper verification.
The Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) came under scrutiny for failing to act on two written complaints regarding Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) violations and illegal construction, exposing significant lapses across multiple government departments.
