Assistant commissioner of police Krunal Desai said preliminary investigations indicated that the casualties were caused due to a boiler explosion at the Bansi Powder Coating firm’s facility. An industrial boiler is usually a closed device used to heat fluid. The blast brought down the entire shed, he said.
“The fire was soon brought under control and did not spread beyond the boiler unit. It was a small unit with a small shed of around 4-5 workers. Two persons received minor injuries, including a nearby shopkeeper whose wall got damaged due to the blast, but they were treated there and did not require hospitalization,” Desai informed.
In another unrelated incident, on June 22, a severe disaster took place in the ERS department of the Chittaranjan Railway Engine Factory while changing the high-tension transformer oil. Suddenly, the transformer exploded. As a result of the oil leak, five workers suffered burns.
The injured were identified as Asim Sinha, Chinmay Canty, Tapas Tikedar-who were CHIRECA workers and two contract workers identified as Nand Kishore Rajak and Rasbihari Karmakar of Kulti.
The injured were rushed to the hospital immediately after the incident. They have been admitted to Kasturba Gandhi Hospital in Chireka. The condition of Asim Sinha is said to be critical.
As soon as Chireka General Manager Hitendra Malhotra learned of the tragedy, he went to Kasturba Gandhi Hospital to inquire about the injured's health.
On the spot, the General Manager stated that our top goal at the moment is to ensure that all injured receive proper treatment. He stated that as much first aid as feasible would be offered at our hospital; if necessary, they would be treated in Mission Hospital Durgapur.
