Gurugram:  In a bid to improve interstate connectivity and encourage greater use of public transport, the Haryana Roadways has added 14 newly-modified air-conditioned buses to the Gurugram bus depot. The number of buses in the fleet increased from 180 to 194. The newly-modified air-conditioned buses come with spacious interiors and comfortable seats without any hike in fares. All 14 buses are expected to become operational next week, an official said.

“Following the increase in commuters and their demand, we added 14 new AC buses,” said Ritu Sharma, Traffic Manager of the Gurugram depot. Further route allocations will depend on the passenger flow, she added.

Out of the 194 buses at the depot, 23 buses will be air-conditioned. Many of these buses are operational and will ply on major long-distance routes, such as Gurugram to Jaipur, Ludhiana, Shimla, Agra, Haridwar, Hisar, Narnaul, and Sirsa. However, the documentation and permit process are still underway.

This step by the authorities is likely to boost interstate connectivity while ensuring the comfort of commuters. “This is a long-distance route, and in summer, it is very difficult to travel. But if the department is increasing and adding AC bus service, then it would be much more comfortable for us,” Abhishek Parewa, a frequent traveller to Jaipur, told Hindustan Times. The addition of AC buses in the fleet is expected to encourage travellers to use public transport more often.
