Gurugram: A man has been arrested for the murder of his pregnant wife, a 27-year-old employee at a private bank in Gurugram, just five months after their marriage. The accused attempted to deceive the police by fabricating a false crime scene.
The accused, Anshul, a chartered accountant from Hisar, who lived in Sector 14 of Hisar but worked in Gurugram, killed his wife, Mahak, during a car journey on the evening of February 15. Around 11 pm, he called the Haryana police, reporting that unknown assailants had stopped their car near a village in Jhajjar district, attempted to rob them, and slit Mahak's throat.
The police arrived quickly and discovered Mahak's body lying on a dirt track, around 100 metres from the Jhajjar-Badli road, with her throat slashed. The case was initially registered as a robbery and murder, but the investigation soon found that it was as a domestic homicide within 18 hours.
During questioning, Anshul initially repeated his version of the story about the robbery. He said that after being attacked by the assailants, they fled, leaving Mahak dead. However, when pressed further, he was unable to provide any descriptions of the attackers no details about their appearance, clothing, or the vehicle they might have used. He also changed his story multiple times during further questioning.
After interrogation for hours, Anshul confessed to killing Mahak. He explained that they had argued during the drive after leaving Mahak’s parental home in Hansi at around 7 pm on February 15. The argument stemmed from Anshul’s suspicions that Mahak was having an extramarital affair, which had caused ongoing tensions since their marriage.
According to Anshul’s statement, he first strangled Mahak inside the car. After confirming she was dead, he put on gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints and used a pair of scissors to slit her throat. He then moved her body onto a dirt track and staged the scene to resemble a robbery before driving a short distance away and calling the police.

Mahak's father, Krishna Kathuria, had expressed suspicions about Anshul from the beginning. Family members also revealed that Mahak was pregnant at the time of her death. The couple had married on September 25, 2025, in an arranged ceremony.
Mahak worked at the HDFC Bank branch in Gurugram, while Anshul maintained his chartered accountancy practice in the same city but had his permanent residence in Hisar.
On February 14, the couple had spent Valentine’s Day with family in Hisar. They were travelling back to Gurugram on the evening of February 15, when the murder occurred four hours into their journey.
The police are currently reviewing the couple's mobile phone records, call logs, and any digital messages that could shed light on the pattern of arguments.
