Haryana IPS Suicide Case: In a major development in the suicide case of Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur has been sent on leave. Kapur is among eight individuals named in the alleged suicide note left by Kumar, who accused them, including former Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, of harassment, discrimination, and defamation.

The decision comes amid growing pressure from the Opposition and Kumar’s family, who have demanded action against the officers accused of harassment. Earlier, the Haryana government had transferred Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya in connection with the case.

"Yes, the DGP has been sent on leave by the government," PTI quoted Rajiv Jaitly, media adviser to the Haryana chief minister, as saying.

So far, Haryana police have named 13 individuals, including former DGPs, ex-Chief Secretaries, Rohtak SP, and the current DGP Shatrujeet Kapur, in the probe into the officer’s death. Kapur, who took charge as Haryana’s top cop on August 16, 2023, has overseen law-and-order challenges and key administrative reforms since his appointment.

IPS Y. Puran Kumar was found dead from a gunshot wound at his Chandigarh residence on October 7. As part of the ongoing probe, Chandigarh Police has issued a notice to IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, wife of the deceased, requesting that she hand over her husband’s laptop to the Special Investigation Team (SIT). Authorities believe the device may hold crucial information about the circumstances leading to his death.

The laptop reportedly contains the suicide note Kumar allegedly typed and saved in drafts. Police aim to determine how many people the note was emailed to, the timing of those emails, and when the recipients opened or viewed them, but the device has not yet been surrendered to the SIT.
