Haryana IPS Officer Suicide: Nearly a week after the Haryana IPS officer, Y Puran Kumar, was found dead at his residence, his body remains in the mortuary at Chandigarh’s Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).
The police transferred his body to PGIMER, allegedly without the consent of Kumar’s family. The officer allegedly shot himself in his head with his service revolver at his residence in Chandigarh on Tuesday.
Kumar’s family reportedly refused to give consent for a postmortem till DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and now-transferred Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya, both named in Kumar’s alleged suicide note, were arrested, The Print reported.
Kumar, in his “final note,” accused both officers of harassing him, based on which his wife filed a complaint.
The Haryana government has been trying to convince Kumar’s family to allow the post-mortem. In their latest attempt, state cabinet ministers Krishan Lal Panwar and Krishan Bedi, both from the Scheduled Caste community, visited the residence of Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, on Saturday. However, the family stood firm on their demands for arrests before proceeding.
Neither the family nor the Haryana government has disclosed details of the conversation. However, reports suggest that the Haryana government offered Kumar's eldest daughter a post as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), and proposed sending DGP Shatrujeet Kapur on a 10-day leave with a replacement appointment in the interim. However, the offers were turned down by Kumar’s family.
“Offering the post of DSP to the deceased IPS officer is nothing new, since it is part of the Haryana government’s ex gratia policy and there are several instances of such appointments to the Haryana Police Service or the Haryana Civil Service on this basis,” the Print quoted sources as saying.
