Ahead of the Bihar Assembly polls, Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party has vowed to lift the prohibition on liquor if voted to power. Calling the Nitish Kumar government's prohibition policy an economic misstep, the party has argued that it has severely impacted the state’s finances and led to a rise in corruption.
Highlighting the economic impact of the liquor ban, Jan Suraj Party president Udai Singh said in Patna that lifting the ban could help the state recover nearly Rs 28,000 crore in lost revenue. While inducting former senior LJP leader Saurav Kumar into the party, Singh said that this recovered revenue would be used to secure loans worth Rs 5-6 lakh crore from the World Bank and the IMF.
He added that Saurav’s background in finance and law would strengthen the party’s economic strategy. “He has worked as the country head of securitisation in a private bank. His expertise will be invaluable as we prepare to raise international funds for Bihar’s development,” Singh said.
Revoke Liquor Ban In An Hour
Prashant Kishor had promised during his state-wide padyatras that the party, if brought to power, would bring the liquor ban within an hour of assuming office. According to the poll strategist turned politician, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s plan which was brought in April 2016, has failed to curb alcohol consumption and instead encourages black-market trade and police excesses.
Jan Suraaj has framed the reversal of prohibition as a cornerstone of its reform agenda, promising to replace moral policing with strict regulation and modern governance.
Saurav Kumar Clarifies His Exit From LJP
Addressing speculations, Kumar Saurav clarified that his exit from the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) was not due to disagreements with party chief Chirag Paswan, rather his firm belief in the political will of Kishor.
“I haven’t left LJP(RV) over any conflict with Chirag ji. I have joined Jan Suraaj because I want to work with Prashant Kishor ji, who has been relentlessly working for Bihar’s development and the upliftment of its people,” Saurav said.
