The Haryana government has asked the Centre to hand over the investigation into the alleged murder of Aqil Akhtar to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Akhtar was found dead at his Sector 4, MDC, Panchkula residence last week.
Haryana Police booked former Punjab director general of police (DGP) Mohammad Mustafa and his wife Razia Sultana, a former minister from the state, in connection with the death of their 35-year-old son Aqil.
A formal reference was made to the Centre on Wednesday. The reference sought CBI's intervention in the case, officials familiar with the investigation told Hindustan Times.
Meanwhile, Mustafa has claimed that his deceased son, Aqil used to torture his wife and mother for money to buy drugs. The retired IPS officer also alleged that on one occasion, Aqil had set their house on fire.
Aqil Was A Drug Addict, Says Father
Mustafa said his son had been a drug addict for nearly two decades adding that the family was long struggling to manage it. He further revealed that the family had been seeking treatment for his drug addiction since 2007, including at PGIMER Chandigarh, but Aqil repeatedly relapsed over the years.

"He was into drugs since he was studying in Class 10 at Welham Boys School in Dehradun and was expelled from multiple schools in Chandigarh. Since 2007, we had been getting him treated for addiction, but he would relapse. Due to psychosis, he had started imagining things. He harassed his wife and mother for money for drugs and had even set our house on fire once. We had filed police complaints against him multiple times at Panchkula but would retract considering he was our blood," The Indian Express quoted the ex-DGP as saying.
"He would not even remember the date or time of when he would record a particular video and would later retract his words after some hours. He would also torture his mother asking for money for drugs and had set house on fire," the father also claimed.
