The Gurugram police have introduced a unique initiative to help overweight officers stationed at various police stations regain their fitness. This special scheme aims to identify officers with excessive weight within 10 days and enroll them in a 40-day structured fitness programme. The primary objective is to enhance the physical health and efficiency of the force, ensuring they can perform their duties more effectively.
Overweight police personnel face challenges in performing physically demanding tasks, which can impact their effectiveness on duty. Beyond that, their fitness levels can also influence public perception of the police force. Recognising this issue, the Gurugram Police Commissioner, Vikas Arora, has instructed the DCP Headquarters to implement this programme promptly.
How the Scheme Works?
As part of this initiative, overweight officers will be identified during the initial 10-day phase. Following this, they will participate in a comprehensive 40-day fitness programme conducted at Civil Lines. The routine will include activities such as yoga, gym workouts, and running to ensure holistic physical improvement.
Addressing the Challenges
Police officers struggling with obesity often find it difficult to chase down criminals or respond quickly in emergencies. This can hinder their ability to maintain law and order effectively. Additionally, such limitations could damage the department’s public image, reducing trust and confidence in law enforcement.
Hidden Health Risks of Obesity
Obesity is not just a fitness concern; it also leads to serious health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and strokes. To combat these risks, the fitness programme will focus on promoting healthy eating habits and regular exercise routines.
Commissioner Vikas Arora emphasised that the department is committed to improving the health and efficiency of its personnel through this initiative.
