Weather Update: India is witnessing an exceptional monsoon season, receiving more than normal rainfall for the first time in 12 years. According to a report by private weather agency Skymet, the country recorded 9 per cent above-average rainfall in June and 5 per cent more than normal in July, a combined surplus of 4.1 per cent over two consecutive months. As per the latest forecast, many states including Delhi are likely to witness heavy rainfall today, bringing both relief and disruption.

Delhi-NCR Likely To Get Rain Today

Widespread rainfall has already lashed several parts of northern and southern India. On Monday, heavy showers were reported across the Delhi-NCR region. However, residents continue to grapple with high humidity. The IMD has predicted light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in Delhi from August 5 to August 7. In neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, a heavy rain alert has been issued for several districts today.

According to the weather department, “There will be heavy rains in many states of North and Northeast India for the next three days.”

Bihar Faces Heavy Downpours

In Bihar, continuous rainfall is impacting daily life. The weather department predicts heavy showers will continue in the state for the next two days. Specific districts such as Purnea, Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, West Champaran, and Samastipur are likely to experience particularly intense rainfall.

Himachal Pradesh On Rain Alert

The monsoon has been especially fierce in hill states like Himachal Pradesh. The IMD has issued warnings for significant rainfall in districts such as Kandha, Kullu, Mandi, Sirmour, and Shimla on August 5. The ongoing rains have raised concerns about landslides and further disruptions in the region.

Northeast Braces For Showers

The northeastern region is also expected to receive substantial rain. In Arunachal Pradesh, heavy showers are forecast from August 4 and between August 7 and 10. The rainfall alert specifically includes districts like Pasighat, Itanagar, and Tawang.

Southern States To See More Rain

In South India, the monsoon remains active, with Kerala and Tamil Nadu experiencing persistent rainfall. Extremely heavy rain is expected in the ghat regions of both states on August 5 and 6, raising concerns over flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Rainfall Surpasses Normal Levels After Over a Decade

This monsoon season marks a significant shift, with the country receiving more rainfall than average for the first time in 12 years. The situation is critical in several states, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where floodwaters have severely impacted communities. Hilly states are also seeing disrupted daily life due to the heavy rains, while several rivers in Madhya Pradesh are flowing above danger levels.

Flood-Like Situation In UP, Bihar

In Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, the floods have already claimed lives. In Bihar alone, six fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours due to lightning strikes. A rain alert remains in place for several districts today, August 5.
