Amid the extensive damage due to persistent heavy rainfall, leading to cloud burst and landslides, and flash floods over the past few weeks, the Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, declared the state disaster-hit on Monday. CM Sukhu declared in the assembly.
According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), the monsoon saw several rain-related disastrous events, leaving 320 dead and inflicting an estimated loss of nearly Rs 3 lakh crore.
The India Meteorological Data showed that the state received 68 per cent above normal rainfall this August, making it the 9th-highest August rainfall since 1901 and the highest since 1949.

The district-level data regarding the number of rain-related deaths recorded this year shows a terrifying picture, as several districts have registered deaths and damage this monsoon. Mandi recorded the highest overall deaths at 51, followed by Kangra and Shimla with 49 and 29 deaths, respectively.
In Mandi, out of the total 59 deaths, 29 were caused by rain incidents, followed by Kangra (30) and Chamba (14). Road accident deaths were most reported in Chamba (22), Mandi (22), and Kangra (19).
Himachal Monsoon Havoc: 1,280 Houses Fully Damaged
The extent of property damage is alarming, with a total of 1,280 houses completely destroyed and 27,640 houses partially damaged. In addition to this, there has been significant destruction to both private and public assets.
Authorities are cautioning that ongoing rainfall poses a risk of triggering further landslides and road blockages. As such, they are advising residents to avoid non-essential travel and remain vigilant regarding weather advisories.
According to the weather office's long-term forecast, it is predicted that rainfall in September will likely exceed normal levels in the state.
