The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), in a late-night operation on Sunday, rescued six people who were stranded in the Beas river near Nagwan village in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district. The people had to be rescued as the water level of the river rose above the danger mark following heavy rain in the hill state.

According to reports, as many as five other individuals died as incessant rains caused devastating landslides and flash floods in Himachal Pradesh on Sunday. The heavy rains in the state also led to extensive damage to houses, halted traffic across the region and disrupted normal life of locals.

The local administration responded to the emergency situation while deploying NDRF teams in several areas and ordering closure of educational institutions for the next two days to ensure public safety. All major rivers in the region, including the Ravi, Beas, Satluj, Swan and Chenab are overflowing causing panic among the locals.

Amid the heavy rain in Mandi and Kullu districts, Himachal Pradesh Chief Parliamentary Secretary Sunder Singh Thakur assured residents that there is no need to panic. Some areas have experienced cloud bursts but Thakur stated that the situation is being effectively managed by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team, district administration and other government departments.

The state meteorological department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rains, with precipitation exceeding 204 mm expected in ten of the twelve districts in the state.
